China - Day 8

Today was the medical exam for the babies.  Maggie is a tiny little peanut and only weighs 15 pounds.   The "exam" was pretty basic - weight, height, hearing, checked her limbs, throat, eyes - that's about it.  She has a bit of a cough and a runny nose but that may be from the air conditioning at the hotel.  It's something she's definitely not used to.

6.8 kilograms = 14.99 pounds

She's got a healthy heartbeat <3

Even the doctor said she was very tiny for her age but she checked out just fine!

She wasn't so sure about them looking in her ears and her throat :-(

Today in China they are celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival. This celebration is a time for protection from evil and disease for the rest of the year. The dragon boats attempt to rescue the patriotic poet Chu Yuan.  Chu Yuan drowned on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in 277 B.C. Chinese people now throw bamboo leaves filled with cooked rice into the water so that the fish will eat the rice rather than the poet.  The boats are very long and were filled with about 50 men rowing as a drummer kept beat on the drums. They have colorful flags on them and the people watching were throwing firecrackers into the river as they went by.

It's been raining here for the last three days so we've spent a lot of time in our hotel room.  I never thought being trapped in a foreign country, in a small hotel room could be so much fun.  It's given me more time to bond with my girl and to watch in awe as she blossoms into such a fun little girl who is growing stronger every day.

Sleeping peacefully with her birthday dolly from Aunt Katie

She amazes me!!!!  She could barely sit up by herself five days ago!!

We finally found an Irish Pub that was recommended by a friend and went there for lunch.

She and Grandpa are becoming fast friends

I love bath time!!!

Grandpa is already turning her into a NY Yankees fan!!

  1. The medical exam looks totally different. Did they remodel since last year? Mia screamed her head off during it. And she had the opposite remarks... Martin said the nurses kept saying "That is HUGE baby!" LOL

Mia made me play the video of Maggie 5 times. She's doing great! You'll be amazed at how fast she progresses.

How awesome that you were there to see dragonboats!! How cool! What a great memory of China.

  4. Thank you for sharing this beautiful journey. Can't help but think of your Mom today, her birthday, how much she would love seeing you as a Mom. I know all your instincts as a Mom are a direct result of the love Mom had for you. I thought about your sadness that Maggie will miss out on some of the rituals of her natural ancestry, and I could understand sadness. But, then I thought about how lucky that God has brought you both together. She has found such a wonderful Mom and extended family that will love and cherish her for all of her days. And, how much her birth family loved her to give her up knowing that her life would be so much better. It is a beautiful story with a happy beginning. I watched Tom's pictures last night and got to see the whole story unfold. The one thing that amazed me was that once she was handed over to you, she never looked back. She never showed any interest in going back to the caregiver's arms. It was as if she knew she had found her Mom. I felt that she could feel your love right from that moment. It brought tears to my eyes. Thanks for sharing this journey. It has been truly amazing. Hope you and Maggie are feeling better!!!
